Abit points to recovery in the textile sector in the first half of 2021
Abit (Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association) announced in a press conference the figures for the textile and apparel sector for the first half of 2021. According to data from the institution, we can notice an upturn compared to 2020, when the pandemic affected production and trade.
According to the president of Abit, Fernando Pimentel, there was an increase of 36% in textile production between January and May 2021, compared to the same period in 2020. Pimentel also highlighted the growth in clothing production, as well as in commerce and especially in jobs. “It is a great joy to see that this growth is translating into job opportunities,” he celebrates.
The executive also highlighted other important points about the current scenario and the impacts of changes in the world as of 2020: the more expressive recovery of the textile sector, which in 2020 can maintain its production with protection items, including masks, and the fact that the sector has not yet returned to the numbers before the pandemic, but the perspective is positive for it to grow again this year.
“The industry was able to meet part of this drop in demand by serving other segments, mainly medical-hospital ones. And even in the clothing area, it also managed to make transformations, changing its line to attend the personal safety part”, he comments.
When it comes to clothing, the segment shows recovery from the worst moment of the pandemic, in April 2020, when the trade was closed. At the time, there was an 81% drop in sales revenue. In the same period in 2021, we see a growth of 121%, again showing signs of recovery.
Projections
In 2021, textile production should grow by 7.4%, reaching two million tons produced. As for revenue, a 9.2% increase is expected in relation to 2020, reaching R$57.5 billion. “We have an upward bias, but with caution,” Pimentel ponders.
