Agreement between Colombia and Mercosul opens doors for Brazilian companies

Colombia has always occupied a prominent place in the actions of Texbrasil Program, due to the country’s importance in the Brazilian textile and fashion industry. The resolution of the Mercosul-Colombia agreement, signed in July of this year, approached even more than two countries, furthermore, encourages the Brazilian entrepreneurs who already saw Colombia as a target and strategic market. Vicunha Têxtil is one of them. The indigo and brine manufacturer has participated in Colombiatex, with the support of Texbrasil, since 2002 and, currently, has a commercial office and showroom in the city of Medellin, to serve the country’s regional markets. Vicunha’s export manager, Josa Otavio de Souza, reveals that the outlook is for growth. “The withdrawal of this tax will contribute to our products becoming more competitive and we believe we can increase our market share. We will be attentive to other actions that allow us to capitalize on the growth of our market share of almost 50 million inhabitants”, he says.

Another Texbrasil company that also expects to improve business with Colombia is Döhler, a company of the branch of bed, table, bath and decoration. According to the company’s export manager, Colombia has stood out in recent years for its economic growth, deploying most of the Latin American countries, and now has the path to tariff ordering surpassed. “We intend to intensify our activities with frequent visits to distributors and clients, as well as participation in local events such as trade fairs and exhibitions and other actions in promotional channels to promote our brand”, says Aldo Schneider. He also says that this year’s estimate of growth is approximately 50% over 2017, maintained as other market variables, such as foreign exchange and policy.

In addition to supporting the participation of Brazilian companies in the main Latin American trade fair of inputs for the textile and clothing industry, Colombiatex, for 16 years, Texbrasil also promotes national products in Colombia through multidisciplinary actions such as buyer project and project image – with buyers, business representatives, journalists and opinion makers coming to Brazil – as well as intelligence studies and defense of interests.

 

About the Mercosul-Colombia agreement

The agreement was signed on July 21 and will reduce to zero export tariffs for Colombia of all items in the textile and apparel chain, bringing new prospects for the trade relationship between the countries of the economic bloc. The free trade agreement promises beneficiary as Brazilian exports to Colombia, which is one of seven target countries in the biennial 2017/2019 of Texbrasil – Brazilian Textile and Fashion Industry Internationalization Program, the result of a partnership between Abit and Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency).
