Colombia has been a huge market for Brazil’s textile industry. For example, in 2017 the country ranked ninth in Brazilian exports, with approximately USD 30 million – an amount that represents around 2% of the country’s total imports. It is within this context that Texbrasil (Brazilian Textile and Fashion Industry Internationalization Program), created by Abit (Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association) in partnership with Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), will take a group of 28 companies to Colombiatex 2018, a show being held in Medellin January 23 to 25.

The companies will show their innovations and launches in supplies and fabrics for underwear, sportswear for the beach, casual wear and jeanswear, among others. This is the first year when these companies will be able to leverage their participation in the event to benefit from a new agreement that has taken effect between Mercosur and Colombia, making Brazilian products more competitive and stimulating market growth for fashion items and especially for items made using denim.

“Colombia is one of the most important countries for Brazil’s textile industry. That is why there are more companies taking part in the Colombiatex show. This time, there will be 28 companies comprehensively representing our production of textiles and inputs for the apparel industry, seeking to expand their business opportunities with Colombian companies,” says Lilian Kaddissi, CEO of the Texbrasil Program.

Excellent prospects

According to data projected for 2018 by Anif (National Association of Financial Institutions), the Colombian textile industry’s real production is expected to grow by 1.4%. On the other hand, a market study also shows that 95% of industry executives believe that the industry will remain stable in the short term; while in the medium and long term, the Colombian government will be careful to allow the sector to recover, making improving technological and operational efficiency a priority, through the “Plan to increase productivity and jobs” program.

Texbrasil has supported its members at Colombiatex for the last 16 years. Brazil’s presence at the show also includes 12 companies making components and machines that are participants in the Abimaq (Brazilian Association of the Machinery and Equipment Industry) Brazil Machinery Solutions project and the Assintecal (Brazilian Association of Components for Leather, Footwear and Artifacts Companies) ByBrasil project.
