Brandili reuses textile waste to make ecological yarns

In its concern for the environment, for five years kidswear manufacturer Brandili Textil has taken the attitude of using natural resources responsibly. “Because we are in a business segment that generates a lot of waste in production processes, we have around 20 procedures and actions focused on preserving and reducing impacts on the environment,” says Leonir Soliman, the company’s Sustainability Manager. The Santa Catarina-based brand is a member of Texbrasil, the Brazilian Fashion Industry Internationalization Program, developed by Abit in partnership with Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency).

One of the measures the company has adopted is reusing textile waste to make ecological yarns. This process relies on some partner companies to carry out the action of reusing industrial waste to produce yarns, made from textile waste and PET bottles. “With this, we have had gains in the environmental area, such as reduced pollution, less use of industrial landfills, less consumption of natural resources and even social benefits, such as creation of jobs in the waste sorting and ecological yarn production processes, not to mention the financial benefits, like cutting BRL 15,000 in monthly transport and industrial landfill use costs,” says Leonir.

Brandili has also adopted recovery of permanent preservation areas by planting native saplings, using a selective collection system and correctly disposing of waste through a waste treatment center. It furthermore treats 100% of wastewater from industrial processes through affluent and effluent treatment stations in addition to collecting and reusing rainwater. The factory also uses recovery of thermal energy from the knit processing division and uses more environmentally-friendly chemical products.

The company moreover works to raise awareness, which is why it holds direct actions with employees and suppliers, replacing the use of printed documents with digital documents and auditing waste disposal by suppliers and subcontractors.
