Brazilian Denim – An expanding industry
Brazil is among the five largest producers and consumers of denim in the world. The national denim fabric industry has grown exponentially in recent years. In 2021, the increase in production was 212% for indigo fabrics (13,114 tons) and 96% for denim fabrics (10,770 tons) in comparison with the year 2020. Between 2017 and 2021, there was a growth of 94% in the volume of indigo exports and 58% in denim fabrics.
The denim segment is one of the highlights in Texbrasil (Brazilian Textile and Fashion Industry Internationalization Program) — the result of a partnership between Abit (Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association) and ApexBrasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) for the quality, creativity and innovation of the producing companies.
Brazil also has a large jeanswear manufacturing sector, with 4,800 production units installed. In 2021 alone, BRL 14.2 billion in revenues were generated. The quantity of parts produced grew 6.3% in relation to the previous year, totaling 304 million units, with 799 thousand of these parts destined for export.
