Brazilian fashion will break the record of participating brands at Coterie/Magic in New York
54 fashion brands seek to achieve the highest turnover in Brazil at these trade shows
Coterie New York, one of the largest women’s fashion and accessories fairs in the United States, will welcome 42 Brazilian brands, and Magic NY, a fashion event with a more commercial footprint that takes place in the same location, will welcome another 12 brands. This is the largest group made up of clothing, footwear and accessories companies to participate simultaneously in both events, to be held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, from September 19th to 21st. The brands are receiving support through sectoral agreements with ApexBrasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) and Sebrae (Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Enterprises) in partnership with Abit (Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association) and Abicalçados (Brazilian Association of Footwear Industries), among others.
Agreements in partnership with ApexBrasil
– Texbrasil, Brazilian textile and fashion industry internationalization program, run by Abit, is bringing the largest number of brands to Coterie (32 companies).
– Brazilian Footwear, a program to encourage exports of Brazilian footwear, run by Abicalçados, bringing 12 brands to Magic.
Some companies also participate through other industry projects such as Fashion Label Brasil, from Abest (Brazilian Association of Fashion Designers), and Precious Brazil, from IBGM (Instituto Brasileiro de Gemas e Metais Preciosos).
Agreement with Sebrae
Another part of the group (10 brands) is being supported by the Vista Brasil Program, a partnership between Abit and Sebrae aimed at developing companies in the fashion segment, as they represent, in quantity, more than 90% of the textile chain in Brazil.
Coterie attracts more and more fashion brands from Brazil
Bringing together the largest number of brands, Coterie has always presented positive results for companies, which is why the number of participants and business generated has been growing. The Coterie edition, held in 2022, resulted in USD 1.7 million in business generated during the three days and USD 4.8 million projected for 12 months.
In the comparison of the last five years, between 2018 and today, 2022 recorded the highest volume of deals closed during the second annual edition of Coterie, when Brazil also recorded a greater number of contacts made than in all previous years of the historical series , with exception to the impacts of the 2020 pandemic, when this edition of the fair was held virtually.
This year, the expectation in clothing is to increase business volume compared to the September 2022 edition. “The American market is very important for women’s fashion brands and, as Coterie always takes place after NY Fashion Week, when the city is still buzzing with buyers, influencers and fashion journalists, we have great business expectations. It is certainly a mandatory moment for a brand to project itself and increase its exports in this market” declares Lilian Kaddissi, Executive Superintendent of Projects at Abit.
For ApexBrasil, the participation of these 54 brands in the NY fairs reflects the maturity and diversity of the fashion industry. “It demonstrates not only the strength and representation of Brazilian fashion in the international market, but also its plurality, as we are supporting brands from different fashion segments, from women’s clothing, accessories, jewelry and footwear. These are brands that present attributes that we increasingly seek to highlight and value, such as creative design, innovation and sustainability”, points out Mariele Christ, manager of fashion industry projects at ApexBrasil.
With the aim of supporting small and micro-enterprises in Brazil, Sebrae also encourages these companies to enter the international market. “The internationalization of any company necessarily involves improving competitiveness, and that is our objective. Seeing these companies embark on this journey and exhibit their products at one of the biggest fashion fairs is a great feeling. For them, it is an opportunity to showcase their brands, expand their consumer reach and be placed in fertile ground for innovation and technological growth.” Adriana Menegaz, National Fashion Manager at Sebrae.
Coterie New York connects emerging and established brands and designers with an elite network of national and international retailers, influencers and media. Its prominence is increased by integrating showrooms and a space dedicated to new designers.
Magic is also consolidating itself as one of the main events in the market with a focus on women’s trends, sportswear, footwear, accessories and children’s clothing, influenced by modernity and contemporary fashion influences. The fair is aimed at all audiences and buyer profiles, such as large department stores, online retailers, specialized boutiques and regional players. “The United States, despite decreasing its imports of Brazilian footwear in 2023, largely due to a drop in internal demand and high inventories, is the second main international market for the Brazilian footwear industry. Being at Magic is essential for brands to maintain and expand their relationship with that market”, comments Paola Pontin, Commercial Promotion analyst at Abicalçados.
