Denim fabric exports are up
In relation to the same period last year, exports of denim fabric were 59.30% higher in volume from January to October 2015: 7,300 tons of fabric were exported compared to 4,600 tons the year prior. Growth in value was up by 35.54%, reaching USD 43.1 million, versus USD 31.8 million the previous year. The price per kilo fell from USD 6.88 to USD 5.86. “The exchange rate factor influenced the price in US dollars, causing our product to become more competitive, as we saw with the significant jump in volume exported,” says Renato Jardim, coordinator of the International Area at Abit.
The information released by the Ministry of Development, Trade and Industry (MDIC, its acronym in Portuguese) and reported by Abit show that the state of Ceara is the biggest exporter of this product. USD 22.7 million and around 4,300 tons were exported from Ceara from January to October 2015, compared to USD 16.6 million and 2,700 tons in the first ten months the year before. Sao Paulo is ranked second: USD 9.7 million and approximately 1,300 tons, which is practically unchanged from the figures seen from January to October 2014.
Also according to the survey, the top destinations for Brazilian denim fabric in 2015 were Argentina (USD 11.1 million), Paraguay (USD 4.5 million) and Bolivia (USD 3.6 million). Other South American countries also had high demand for this material, such as Peru and Ecuador, which both had growth of over 100% in both volume and value.
On the other hand, the figures showed an overall drop in imports of denim fabric in the respective January-October 2014/2015 comparison, going from approximately USD 25 million to USD 15.4 million and from 4,700 tons to 3,100 tons.
