The Brazilian textile and apparel industry will be one of the first economic sectors to be received by the new Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Roberto Azevedo, who took office on September 1st. The meeting will take place in Switzerland, on September 10, with a committee from Abit.

The Entity believes the ambassador will update the WTO on the international reality. “We have very high hopes of Robert’s leadership of the WTO, promoting, among other things, the updating and revision of the global regulations on production, particularly in relation to the sustainability of the Planet, impacting the competition among countries. We consider it an honor to be received by the new director, and we also bring our support in the conducting of global trade, restoring the Doha Development Round and speeding up trade negotiations. This reception leaves no doubt as to the important role played by the textile and apparel industry in our country”, said Abit president, Aguinaldo Diniz Filho.

Before the meeting with Azevedo, the Abit committee will take part in the 2013 Conference of the International Textile Manufactures Federation (ITMF), which will take place on September 8th to 10th in Bregenz, Austria. This year’s event is special for the Brazilian sector, because the ITMF is headed by businessman Josue Gomes da Silva of Coteminas group, emeritus president of Abit. This year, the theme of the congress will be Rebalancing the Power Between Manufacturing and Retail, seeking to promote the integration of global representatives of all the links of the textile and apparel chain.

“It is a unique moment in which the main players in the sector worldwide come together to discuss the prospects for the coming years, and present the latest figures. Brazil, which has the fourth largest textile industry in the world, always features prominently during the Conferences, gaining attention from the Chinese, Turkish, Indian, Italian, French, and American, among other countries”, Diniz Filho emphasized.
