On Monday evening (Sept. 30), fashion designer Gabriela Sakate, a participant in BtoBe, an incubator for up and coming talent from Texbrasil (Brazilian Fashion Industry Internationalization Program, developed by Abit in partnership with Apex-Brasil), won the Prêmio Jovem Brasileiro (Young Brazilian Award) in the fashion category. The awards ceremony took place at Memorial da America Latina and was broadcast live on the internet. It was also attended by several celebrities and included presentations by the O Teatro Magico group, Banda Girls and the comedy troupe Comedia em Preto e Branco.

“I think this initiative is extremely important, since it is an incentive for young people to believe that they can make a difference, standing out in something that is their dream. It’s good to show young people that they can face the many hardships the market and society place before them. Becoming a reference for those entering the market is also very good and is a huge responsibility,” said the designer. With the support of Texbrasil, Gabriela was recently in Paris and London, showing her collection at Who’s Next Prêt-à-Porter and at The Laundry. She was also highlighted by Marie Claire magazine in the UK as one of the world’s five hot new designers to watch. Sakate studied at the Esmod/Paris and Central Saint Martins/London schools in Europe. She launched her self-named brand after winning a Senac-SP and SPFW contest. Her style, notable for its minimalist and feminine tailoring, is easily recognizable in her work. The designer always experiments with new materials, mixing originality and elegance in her collections, geared towards contemporary women.

“With Brazilian and Eastern roots, Gabriela Sakate’s work is essentially global, which is why her collections enchant consumers in the most varied places. This DNA is allied with technical rigor in executing items, resulting in a brand that can be immediately consumed by more demanding and mature markets,” says Evilasio Miranda, Manager of Texbrasil’s Fashion and Design Center. In the future, Gabriela plans to further leverage the brand by investing in innovation and increasing her reach in Brazil and the foreign market.

The Award was created by young entrepreneur Guto Melo and given by Senac and the Zapping agency. The event is aimed at appreciation of Brazilian youth and promoting integration of young winners. Among award winners in recent editions are: Eduardo Sterblitch, for his show A Velha; Marimoon, a former MTV VJ; Projota and NGO “Um teto para o meu país.”
