The 3rd edition of Licoes da Casa (Casa Lessons), a content event by Casa de Criadores (House of Creators), was held from October 28 to 29, at Memorial da America Latina. Talks, roundtables and lectures marked the event, aimed at students and young entrepreneurs. It included attendance by professionals from various areas, such as designers Renan Serrano and Taina Barriovuevo, the director of Carreira Fashion, Airton Embacher, professor Clotilde Peres, and TV producer Janeth Charris.
Colombia’s Charris was a special guest of Texbrasil (Brazilian Fashion Industry Internationalization Program, executed in partnership with Abit and Apex-Brasil), invited to accompany Casa de Criadores. In charge of fashion TV and reality shows shown on the largest TV network in the Andean country, Charris is interested in new designers and explained communications strategies to publicize work during a talk with Evilasio Miranda, the Manager of the Fashion and Design Center at Texbrasil.
In their chat, she talked about how an up and coming designer should use different means of communication to publicize their creations, from social networks and blogs to more elaborate methods, such as fashion films. Charris also discussed the importance of joining with professionals close to your area and provided the example of Colombian collectives of new creators, young people that share the same work space to join their knowledge and sell their products. These spaces are usually near universities and cultural centers, therefore bringing the brands closer to their target publics.
Finally, she highlighted the importance of initiatives by large brands to sponsor young designers. The Colombian retail chain Falabella, for example, holds an annual contest that picks the best designer to sell a product line. If sales go well, the items remain on sale for the next season, giving the new designer a higher profile.
