Santa Catarina Fashion and Culture surprises international journalists
On November 30, a pair of journalists tracked the exhibitions of work developed throughout the year by the SCMC – Santa Catarina Fashion and Culture project. The project is comprised of a group of companies in the Santa Catarina state who are seeking to foster development of fashion production and local design. Samantha Aldenton, from the WGSN trend bureau, and Victoria Lescano, a columnist from Argentina’s Página12 newspaper attended as guests of Texbrasil (Brazilian Fashion Industry Internationalization Program) to take an up-close look at all of the cultural wealth Santa Catarina has to offer.
The event included music, art and cuisine and showed the results of this year’s studies done by students, teachers and employees at member companies, who as a group mapped iconic characters from this culture to show what it means to live in a state with this lifestyle. Each team worked to develop a 10-piece collection expressing the essence of their icon’s lifestyle.
This was Samantha Aldenton’s first time in Brazil and she was fascinated by the event’s proposal, which covered various elements of art and culture. “I was surprised by the creativity and innovation in the event’s format, which shows more than fashion and industry, it also shows several sectors joining together to build the image of Santa Catarina,” she said.
The opinion-makers also visited textile factories during their stay. Hering, Karsten and Dudalina welcomed the journalists, who used the chance to find out more about the country’s manufacturing scene. “We had the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge on the integration between manufacturing and fashion in Santa Catarina. It is really interesting to see how a consolidated industry echoes in the local culture,” stated Victoria Lescano.
