Sultextil and Universidade Caxias do Sul take fashion student to Paris
On December 1, Universidade Caxias do Sul (UCS), in partnership with the Sultextil weaving company, a member of Texbrasil, the Brazilian Fashion Industry Internationalization Program, developed by Abit and Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), announced the winners of the 32ndedition of the UCS Sultextil Award.
The initiative lets students graduating from the Fashion Design Technology course work with the fabrics the brand is launching to develop conceptual pieces that are shown at a fashion show and judged by a panel. The panel is made up of five fashion professionals from across Brazil who meet to assess the looks made by each participant along with their creative and technical portfolio. Loyalty to the theme, execution of the item and innovation are among the criteria judged.
The winner, Julia Varaschin Webber, created her work in just a few months, choosing the theme ‘I Would Rather Be a Cyborg than a Goddess.’ The designer made four looks with three pieces each, but only one of her compositions was shown at the awards ceremony fashion show. She explained her choice: “Our bodies are becoming obsolete. We wouldn’t mind being more similar to machines, to be able to have mechanisms that save us work, tools that save lives, attractive features and seductive amusements. It may seem a little too futuristic at first, but in researching in-depth, we are already going through this process,” says Webber.
Julia was awarded a trip to Paris to see the biggest international fashion trade shows. In addition, the young designer hopes that this award will bring her more work. “The idea is to gain more work in the area of costume design, since it joins the two things I love: research and creation. My goal is to delight people, and if I can do this somehow, then I am happy,” she says.
Students Roberta Haefliger Martins and Franciele Pavoni were also awarded with second and third place, respectively.
