Texbrasil visits Mexico to discuss trade agreement
From August 21 to 24, a representative of Abit/Texbrasil is in Mexico City for a mission to defend Brazilian companies interests, with the objective of improving the access of Brazilian textile and clothing companies to the country, one of the target markets for the biennium 2017/2019 of Texbrasil – Brazilian Textile and Fashion Industry Internationalization Program, the result of a partnership between Abit and Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency).
Brazil is currently in the phase of negotiations for the extension of the Economic Complementation Agreement (ACE – 53) signed with Mexico, so that the textile and garments will be included in the agreement of tariff preferences. The current forecast is that by the end of this year the negotiations will have been finalized. With this, the strategy is to open market for the segment of technical fabrics and nonwoven, and increase the national participation in the other segments.
Mexico is among the top five destinations for Brazilian exports of textiles and garments, as well as being a major importer worldwide. A free trade agreement with the country should increase the attractiveness of Brazilian products in that market, since the tariff of the import tax for garments reaches more than 20%. In addition, other issues are on the negotiating agenda of this agreement as non-tariff barriers, rules of origin, government procurement and others, all important for the sector.
