Santista launches denim with mosquito repellent technology
Earlier this month, Santista Jeanswear introduced the latest in denim from its Winter 2017 collection, with launches that are increasingly aligned with consumers’ reality. The company, which is one of the largest textile manufacturers in Latin America and for 10 years it has been a member of Texbrasil, the Brazilian Fashion Industry Internationalization Program, developed by Abit in partnership with Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), has just launched two types of mosquito-repelling denim: Denim Therapy Repeller and Repeller Light.
These new fabrics have a Permethrin-based finish that prevents contact with the aedes aegypti, which transmits dengue, zika virus, yellow fever and chikungunya. Permethrin is a synthetic compound that is also among the active ingredients in bug sprays and creams and is a technology similar to one used in army uniforms and hiking garments. And that is not all: not only does it keep bugs away and keep them from landing, but Santista’s new denim also has the “hot feet” effect – if the insect lands on the jeans, an active substance causes hyperexcitability, resulting in a knock-out (paralyzing) effect, causing the bug to die.
Developed and produced by the Santista Jeanswear team in Brazil, the repellent jeans technology has gone through six months of testing to prove its efficacy and gain certification from the CHT/Benzena lab in Germany, one of the world’s most important labs. The Permethrin used in the fabrics is also supplied by the Germany company and its application on textile treatments is approved by the Öko-Tex 100 standard.
The fabrics are scentless, pose no risk of intoxication and can be used by adults, pregnant women and children over two. While Repeller Light has 28% stretch and durability of around 40 home washes, Denim Therapy Repeller is 100% cotton and is recommended for hosiery, resisting up to 50 washes while still maintaining its technology. Both are available now in Brazil and for export.
