Yarn Bombing Day: Círculo S/A joins two artisan collectives to create textile public art in Italy

Textile artists from around the world will gather on August 9 and 10 to promote the Yarn Bombing Day urban art project throughout the streets of Trivento, Italy. The Brazilian collectives Meiofio and TeceLãs received help from Círculo S/A, which is a participant in Texbrasil (Brazilian Textile and Fashion Industry Internationalization Program) – the result of a partnership between Abit (Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association) and Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) – in order to create the outdoor crochet pieces.

Yarn Bombing Day is globally commemorated to encourage the creation of urban art pieces using crocheting and knitting. The goal is to occupy and re-signify spaces such as fences, utility poles, bridges, trees, and other objects.

For the streets of Trivento, the collective Meiofio replicated the pattern seen on São Paulo sidewalks. “We are taking a little piece of our city to Italy. It is a very large project, 15 meters wide and 1.2 meters long, and relied on the collaboration of many hands,” says Nara Rossetto, one of the creators of Meiofio. More than 20 people helped knit the project over the course of five months. The work consumed about 200 balls of thread.

The collective TeceLãs, meanwhile, decided to create a panel 2.5 meters wide by 2.5 meters long representing Brazil’s flora. “It was complementary work, which received contributions from the five members of our collective. Everyone played a part, and at the end we got together to finish the complete panel. We use knitting, tricotin, and crochet, in 12 colors of Mollet and Pompom Fofo yarn from Círculo S/A”, says Lu Gastal, one of the members of TeceLãs. The equivalent of 6 pounds of yarn was used in this panel.
