To preserve nature, Santaconstancia develops sustainable fabrics
Aimed at contributing to a more balanced relationship between people, apparel and the environment, Santaconstancia, a weaving company and member of Texbrasil, the Brazilian Fashion Industry Internationalization Program, developed by Abit in partnership with Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), has recently launched a line of knits and fabrics using CO2control®, a certification given only to articles with acknowledged good environmental practice rates throughout their production chains, from the origin of the raw material to final production of the yarn.
The initiative is a result of the company’s need to expand its transparency in the market and consolidate actions that allow for changes to more equitable, socially ethical and environmentally correct textile production. Notable among the main factors contributing to the certification are an absence of toxicity in relation to skin and the environment, rational water consumption and disposal that involves concepts such as biodegradability and composting.
The weaver is also highlighting the importance of joining forces to find a less aggressive means of production. To do this, it has entered into partnerships with four internationally consolidated companies: Rhodia, responsible for Amni Soul Eco, a biodegradable polyamide that quickly decomposes when disposed of in landfills; Austria’s Lenzing, a producer of cellulosic fibers such as Modal®, Micromodal® and Tencel®, which is recognized for its sustainable practices and closed production cycles; Japan’s Ichimura Sangyo, a polyester manufacturer that allows for composting of fabric when it is discarded under appropriate conditions; and Belgium’s Jos Vanneste, a supplier of CELC (European Confederation of Linen and Hemp) certified linen that is fully traceable and uses zero irrigation and zero waste.
Santaconstancia has developed a special tag, made of paper and plant-based ink of certified origin, to encourage conscientious consumption and to identify its fabrics with the CO2control® concept for end consumers, attesting to the item’s origin and authenticity. It is printed symbolically using the color green, with degradable ink, identifying the family of CO2control® fabrics and knits in combination with their respective names, such as Light (CO2control®).
